Blog: Meet Olga

Packing a whole life in a few boxes and leaving home town for some can be exciting, but stressful for others. There are many reasons why people move, such as school, work, and love, but sometimes also the urgent necessity to come to safer and peaceful surroundings.

To understand the ones who decided to leave their homes due to instability, we talked to Olga, the 32-year-old mother of 7-year-old Sasha, coming from Ukraine to Croatia.

Making decision

For Olga, leaving her hometown and finding a safe place in Croatia was a difficult and life-changing process. Having had a stable income, a cosy apartment and a loving family around were pros of her life in Ukraine.

However when peace was intruded, she did not have the chance to overlook the pros and cons and decided the best for her family – her only option was to leave. We listened to Olga explaining how she managed to get out of the country, and we were amazed by her positive attitude and smile on her face.

Travelling by bus, walking across the border and then travelling by train was not easy for Olga and Sasha. However, her determination to come to Croatia, as well as her can-do attitude, helped a lot. As soon as they arrived, Olga immersed herself in a local community.

Immersing into local community

I worked as a photographer and singer in Ukraine, but now I am ready to do any work that I can get. Being lazy is not my thing. I enjoy meeting new people and sharing experiences, and that is how I got my first job, said Olga. Balancing life and work can be tricky, especially for young mothers.

Yet, Olga told us that she is happy to have found it in a small town where everyone knows everyone. Most importantly, her son joined kindergarten, made new friends and learns the language as fast and intuitively as children are supposed to do. At the same time, Olga gets time for herself where she studies the language intensively and takes over jobs like translating web pages and apps or cleaning shrimp or preparing tourist apartments for the season.

Lesson learned

Olga’s story is impressive, and for us, it is a great inspiration to follow dreams and focus on the positive side of life. For her, this is just one step to recreating a new life from the beginning. We can learn from Olga’s story that when one finds himself in a new place, it is of utmost  importance to pay attention to these 3 things:

1. stay in touch with friends and family,

2. find work that fulfils and feeds you and

3. create a new routine that allows you to meet new people.
